Abstract

Engineering competitions are a rich educational context in which students can develop an entrepreneurial mindset. In order to support students' EM, we have developed a set of skills that contribute to competition team success. The skillset represents the adaptation of the EU Complementary Skills to the competition environment; we believe that the adaptation can help faculty who mentor teams to identify students' skills gap, locate resources that can contribute to students' development, and encourage students to adopt an entrepreneurial mindset. In this presentation, we will introduce attendees to the Engineering Unleashed Competition Team Skillset and show how the skillset contributes to competition team success. Our intention is to make this presentation interactive within the confines of the session.

First, we will introduce attendees to the EU Competition Team Skillset Roadmap, a visual representation of crucial skills that students need to be successful in engineering competitions. Second, we will then focus on one of the skills that is applicable to any competition: recruiting and retaining competition team members. This skill is key to forming a competition team and retaining team members during the competition year. Third, we will ask attendees to share best practices for recruiting and retaining team members that they use on their campuses. Gathering input from attendees about the current Roadmap will contribute to refinement of the tool. Finally, we will share resources that can help students develop the skill. By the end of the presentation, we plan to have each attendee leave with a familiarity with the Roadmap and several strategies for employing it with their students.
