Abstract

Using a Sustainable Infrastructure Rating System in the Civil Engineering Capstone Design CourseSustainability has become a key concept for engineering education. In civil engineering it isfundamental. In the past decade a number of efforts have been made to incorporate sustainabilityengineering knowledge and techniques into civil engineering courses and curriculum. Oneapproach has been to use professional rating systems as a vehicle in capstone design courses. This paper describes such an approach using the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure (ISI)EnvisionTM rating system. In the approach, students are first presented fundamental sustainabilityconcepts in an introductory lesson. In this lesson students are introduced to the EnvisionTMRating System. The students then apply the rating system to their capstone design project. Atintervals throughout the semester students are also introduced to specific parts of EnvisionTM tohelp them explore the underlying concepts and see how it applies in practice to their project. Akey unique aspect of the educational experience is an optional opportunity for students to seekthe student credential of EnvisionTM Sustainability Professional (ENV SP). This co-curricularopportunity just coming available provides motivation for the students to learn sustainabilityprinciples and EnvisionTM. The assessment includes surveys of student perceptions of theirlearning and satisfaction with the approach. In additional learning of sustainability knowledgeand understanding of the EnvisionTM Rating System is assessed with quizzes.
