Abstract

Work-in-Progress: Experience of Teaching Internet-of-Things Using TI ARM based Connected LaunchpadAbstractAs IPv4 is giving way to IPv6, every device on the Internet can have its own unique IP address.Machine to Machine communication is on the rise. The number of connected devices is predictedto surpass 50 billion by 2020. The growing interconnected web of devices is often referred to asthe Internet of Tings (IoT). The majority of connected devices in the IoT containmicrocontrollers (MCUs), network (wired or wireless) devices, sensors and actuators. There is agreat need to educate students IoT so that they are capable of developing basic IoT applications. This paper presents our on-going work to introduce students IoT by using the Tiva C seriesTM4C1294 Connected Launch Pad (EK-TMC1294XL) from TI in the embedded networkcourse. The microprocessor on board is ARM Cortex M4. We introduce students the TCP/IPprotocols, and major wireless communication technologies like WiFi, Bluetooth and WiMAX.The EK-TMC1294XL Launchpad is used in the lab sessions to study the implementation ofTCP/IP protocols in practice and how to use drivers Ethernet port and wifi boostpack providedfrom TI and open source resources like lightweight IP to develop basic IoT applications. Thispaper presents the course outcomes, contents and lab preparations for teaching IoT in details.
