Dr. Ya-Shu Kang, Chung Yuan Christian University.
Ya-Shu Kang is an Assistant Professor in Department of Special Education at Chung Yuan Christian University. Kang received her Ph.D. from the University of Oklahoma, and has been involved in special education for over 10 years. At CYCU, she teaches and conducts research in the area of learning disabilities, inclusive education, preschool special education, and educational technology for students with special needs. She also serves as the member of special education committee.

Dr. Chang has been working on disability research since 2007. He started to serve as Chairman of Association of Supported Employment for People with Disabilities in 2009. Dr. Chang has strong research partnership with major medical institutions and non-profit organizations in Taiwan. His Kinect research won Microsoft Taiwan 2011 Kinect Innovation Award, Second Place and he supervised a study that won ACM 2012 Student Research Award based on work using Kinect for children with problem behavior, Third Place. Dr. Chang is a member of ACM and ACM’s Special Interest Group for Accessibility.

Dr. Shaou-Gang Miaou is a Professor and former Chairman in the Department of Electronic Engineering, Chung-Yuan Christian University (CYCU), Taiwan. Miaou teaches and conducts research in the area of digital signal processing, digital image processing, and pattern recognition. He has published 145 technical papers and 5 textbooks, and has been granted 9 ROC invention patents in the area of his research interests. He received the B.S. degree in electronic engineering from CYCU, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Florida. He is a former Chairman of Master Program in Communication Engineering, CYCU. He has been serving as a reviewing member for Accreditation of Engineering Education (organized by Institute of Engineering Education Taiwan, IEET) for 7 years. He is a Senior Member of IEEE and a member of ASEE. He is the acting Dean of the College of Electrical and Computer Science, CYCU.

Dr. Chen is an associate professor and director of creative design center at Chung Yuan Christian University, he has been involved in design education for more than 28 years.Li-Yu teaches and conducts research in the area of the user-friendly environment. He started to serve as Secretary-general of Taiwan Association of Life-Welfare since 2012. Li-Yu is also a government committee member of Ministry of Health and Welfare for his long term engage in Taiwan children safety environment.

Yao-Sheng Chang is an assistant professor in the Tourism and Leisure Management Department at the Chung Chou University of Science and Technology. He earned both his MBA and PhD degree from the School of National Chiao Tung University at Taiwan. His research interests include e-business, knowledge management, community media behavior, and information technology management. His research has been published in the Behaviour and Information Technology, Journal of Computer Assisted Learning, Educational Technology and Society, Action Research, Interactive Learning Environments, etc.

Abstract

Engineering students have taken the service learning course Service Design and Field Applications for 9 years. The objective of the course is to develop professional skills in electrical and computer engineering by developing training technology for children of special education schools. Partnering with two special education schools, three groups of students designed three training games in the spring semester of 2016. In this paper, we reported the design of a bathing training game for children with autism who have not been able to take a bath independently. Bathing training at special education schools is difficult due to lack of staff and bathing facility. A group of four juniors helped the special education teacher prepare the task analysis steps of bathing training and designed a bathing training game using the Microsoft Kinect sensor. Six 10-year-old children with autism participated in the design process of the prototype. They had very limited verbal skills but still used expressions to give feedback which made the iterative design possible. The Kinect-based bathing training game was completed as a result of 6-month collaboration. With parental participation, the six children with autism joined a six-week training program that aimed to help children develop independent bathing skills. The program had three phases which were baseline (week 1), intervention (week 2~ week 4), and maintenance (week 5~week 6). In the baseline phase, parents bathed their children as usual. In the intervention phase, engineering students helped each child play the game at school for 15 min every day. The child was encouraged to take a bath independently at home monitored by a parent. In the maintenance phase, children did not play the game at school but they kept taking a bath independently at home monitored by a parent. All the six children maintained their bathing skills after the training program. Through service learning the engineering students experienced the partnership building, project design and execution, and how technology improved the quality of life of children with special needs.
