Abstract

Abstract Reviewed Presentation

Gonzaga University has a long tradition of Community Engaged Learning (CEL) and has recently increased their work in the area through a place-based initiative called Opportunity Northeast, which focuses much of this work on the communities near the campus in northeast Spokane. CEL courses go through a special review process and are noted on a student’s transcript. For a course to be eligible, CEL courses must integrate meaningful work with the community, include reflection, and teach civic responsibility. While popular across campus, CEL courses were not available in the School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) until the 2021-2022 academic year, when select sections of Gonzaga’s year-long senior design experience were designated as CEL. Near the time that the CEL courses were being rolled out in SEAS, discussion on issues of social justice were taking the forefront on campus and across the nation. Leveraging the work that was being done on the CEL courses, the civil engineering program developed curricular experiences for all their senior design sections around social justice and community impacts and added a requirement that all civil engineering senior design projects needed to perform a community-impact assessment. This presentation talks about the challenges and benefits of community-engaged courses within the context of engineering and highlights the work the department has done in increasing the awareness and skills around social justice and community impacts.
