This abstract is intended to prepare a presentation only (no full paper). A new course titled “Idaho Drone League for Vandals (IDRONE VANDALS)” is proposed to support undergraduate students interested in today’s fast-moving technologies, such as unmanned aircraft systems (UAS, e.g., drones), robotics, artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning. The main aim of IDRONE VANDALS is to increase students’ interest and identity in STEM through hands-on workshops, leading them to graduate with technical skillsets. Based on Project-Based Learning (PjBL) principles, the effective and cohesive IDRONE VANDALS will focus on the application of foundational STEM skillsets to promote an immersive, experience STEM learning in different disciplines at three colleges (CALS, CNR, and COE) at the University of Idaho with the following goals: 1) Increase students’ STEM identity by exploring technical solutions for real-world problems, 2) Harness students’ STEM skillsets by increasing self-efficacy on emergent technology and applications, and 3) Increase retention and graduation rates for career-ready undergraduate students, ultimately contributing to the nation’s workforce development. During the presentation, we will highlight key informal STEM learning modules and share past experiences with the participants to explore potential collaborations at regional and/or national levels.
