Dr. Kevin R. Anderson is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at California State Polytechnic
University, Pomona. Dr. Anderson obtained his Ph.D. and MSME degrees from the University of
Colorado Boulder and his BSME at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. Dr. Anderson has
over 100 technical publications. He was the previous director of the Control Systems Laboratory in the
Mechanical Engineering Department California State Polytechnic University, Pomona focusing on
PLC and PAC lab development. Dr. Anderson also holds an active Mechanical Engineering P.E. license.

Dr. Nolan Tsuchiya is an Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. Dr. Tsuchiya obtained his Ph.D. from University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) focusing on Dynamic Systems and Control. Dr. Tsuchiya teaches Feedback Control Systems, System Dynamics, and Computer Programming courses using MATLAB/SIMULINK at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. He is currently the faculty advisor for the premier Formula and BAJA SAE collegiate racing teams. He holds an active California PE license.

Abstract

This paper will discuss the use of on-line resources and simulaton software to faciltate the teaching of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) and Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) Tuning for undergraduate Controls Systems courses. The PLC software discussed herein is the Automation Direct Do-More PLC simulation software. The on-line resources include a series of YouTube Videos produced by Automation Direct. The paper will present a hands-on lab manual derived from the Automation Direct YouTube videos tailored to enable the instuction of the Do-More PLC platform for implementing PID loops in control systems. The tutorial based approach to pragmatic experiential learning will be linked to the departments learning outcomes and objectives and their tie in to ABET guidelines. The paper will also include a seciton on on-line based assessment of using virtual software learning platforms such as the one showcased herein.
