Victoria Bill is the Managing Director of the MakerSpace Lab & Experiential Learning Center at NYU Tandon School of Engineering. She is also an Adjunct Professor in the First-Year Engineering Program. She studied electrical engineering and received her B.S. from the Ohio State University and her M.S. from the University of Texas at Austin. She is currently pursuing her PhD in Engineering Education from the Ohio State University.

Jack Bringardner is a Teaching Associate Professor and Director of Education Innovation at Colorado School of Mines in the Engineering, Design, and Society Department. He teaches the first-year engineering Cornerstone design course. His primary focus is developing curriculum, mentoring students, and engineering education research, particularly for project-based courses, the first-year engineering experience, and student professional skills. He is active in the American Society for Engineering Education and serves on the First-Year Programs Division Executive Board and was the past Webmanager for the ASEE First-Year Programs Division and the First-Year Engineering Experience Conference. He is on the Executive Steering Committee for the Vertically Integrated Projects Consortium. Prior to working at Colorado School of Mines, he was the Assistant Dean for Academics and taught Introduction to Engineering and Design at the NYU Tandon School of Engineering.

Dr. Ingrid J. Paredes is an Industry Assistant Professor in the First-Year Engineering Program at NYU Tandon School of Engineering. She studied chemical engineering and received her B.S. and M.S. at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, and her Ph.D. at NYU Tandon School of Engineering. Her interests include diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher education and sustainability education for engineers.

Abstract

This is a work-in-progress innovative practice paper describing the addition of several career preparation and development assignments into a single semester first-year engineering design course. The class is taught at a large, private institution in the US Northeast region and includes weekly lecture, lab, and recitation. Students must complete a semester-long design project as well as project documentation and the enhanced career development assignments, which include a resume, cover letter, LinkedIn profile, and a digital portfolio. The cover letter and portfolio assignments are new for the 2022-2023 academic year and the design and implementation of these assignments as well as the learning outcomes and course planning will be detailed in the paper.

These enhanced assignments are part of a long-term plan to embed professional skill development across the undergraduate engineering curriculum and experience at the school. They were made possible through approval of the school of engineering faculty to expand the course from 3 credits to 4 credits per semester. Development for these modules and support for student career preparation has been created in partnership with the school’s new Assistant Dean of Student Life and Career Services, who now leads one lecture per semester introducing students to the various resources available on campus. The portfolio assignment was created through a partnership with the school’s Design Lab, which focuses on project documentation, mentoring, and support within the school’s makerspace. Throughout the semester, students are instructed on career preparation through introductory presentations within their recitation, and they are structured so that the students prepare to apply for an internship or job posting of their choosing.

Implementation of the new modules for the 2022-2023 academic year will be described with preliminary student feedback.
