Abstract

Virtual Transmission Impairment Measurement Set (VTIMS) as a Senior Design Project for Electrical Engineering majorsIn this project, using Laboratory Virtual Instrumentation Engineering Workbench (LabVIEW)software, we designed an analog VTIMS as an alternative to using the commercially availablestand-alone Transmission Impairment Measurement Sets (TIMS). The project was accomplishedby three undergraduate electrical engineering students under the supervision of a faculty advisorand two engineering advisors from the industry that the VTIMS was designed for during the two-semester senior engineering design course sequence. We used the available application VirtualInstruments (VI) library provided in the LabVIEW to custom build the VIs to perform the analogfunctionalities of the stand-alone TIMS. These functionalities include: Single Tone Generation,1004Hz Net Loss measurement, Signal to C-Notched Noise Ratio measurement, Impulse Noisemeasurement, Three Tone Slope Measurement, Attenuation Distortion measurement, 23-ToneSignal generation, Inter-modulation Distortion measurement, and Envelope Delay Distortion. Inaddition to these functionalities, VTIMS has the capability of generating report of the testmeasurements conforming to the industry desired “Interim Technical Performance Report” or“Key Performance Parameters” template and highlight any value outside the tolerable range asdetailed in the IEEE Std 743-1995. The VTIMS application resides in a lap top that is connectedto the network/system under test using an NI USB powered DAQ for the signal transmission anddata acquisition. A simple circuit was also designed, built and incorporated into the dataacquisition system to afford required impedance matching and 2 –to- 4 wire connectivity. TheVTIMS functionalities were examined versus the TIMS; and we concluded that it can be used asan alternative to the TIMS; but more efficient and affordable. In this paper we will detail thedesign and the functionalities of this VTIMS and the benefits of the industry and universitycollaboration in preparing highly skilled engineering work force.
