Abstract

Integration of Capstone Design Experience with the International Exchange ProgramThis paper presents an overview of our experience integrating international aspects into thesenior capstone design experience. We started in 2005 with two international teams composed ofstudents from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at a University in the U.S. and (i) theDepartment of Mechanical Engineering at a Brazilian University and (ii) the Department ofElectrical Engineering at a University in Romania. The second year we had a project between theU.S. and Brazil. After completing the second round of teams we were able to evaluate somecorrections that were introduced after the first year (to address the lack of effectivecommunication and reported in our strategies and lessons learned regarding the team selectionprocess, the selection of effective communication channels, the funding, and positive andnegative elements associated with the experience. Partially based on these early endeavors, weproposed the integration of the international design project collaboration into an internationalexchange program between U.S. and Brazil funded by U.S. Department of Education’s Fund forthe Improvement for Post-Secondary Education (FIPSE) program. We plan to formalize theinternational design collaboration as an integral part of the exchange experience by engagingvisiting students in specifically arranged design projects which require close interaction betweenstudents from both schools, both through direct contact and virtual interface through the Internet. For the first year, we propose the design and fabrication of a prototype unit for monitoring andcontrolling CO2 and other greenhouse gases for a photobioreactor system designed for thepromotion of algae growth. In the full paper, we will report experience learned in theimplementation of the project and our recommendation to fully integrate the design project intothe curriculum of the exchange program.
